1954

Heidtman Steel Established

In 1954, Heidtman Steel emerged in Toledo, Ohio, with a mission to redefine steel fabrication. Our dedication to quality craftsmanship set a foundation for innovation, forging a lasting legacy in steel processing that continues to inspire.

1963

Heidtman-Bates Partnership Begins

In 1964, Bill Heidtman took the helm, partnering with John Bates to elevate Heidtman Steel. Their bold vision sparked advancements in steel processing, laying a cornerstone for quality and progress in our industry.

1965

Tornado Recovery and Bates’ Stake

A 1965 Palm Sunday tornado ravaged Heidtman Steel, but we rebuilt with grit. John Bates secured a 20 percent stake via a $10,000 family loan, fortifying our resolve to deliver superior steel solutions.

1971

Steel Slitting Expansion

In 1971, Heidtman Steel embraced steel slitting, moving beyond shearing to offer precise cuts. This technical leap enhanced our ability to provide customized steel, cementing our role as a leader in processing innovation.

HSLA Steel Specialization

1983

Bates Family Ownership Begins

1984

Granite City Plant Opens

In 1984, Heidtman Steel opened its Granite City plant, introducing a state-of-the-art pickling line. This expansion refined our steel processing, producing pristine steel and strengthening our legacy of precision and innovation.

National Galvanizing Partnership Formed

In 1984, Heidtman Steel and National Material launched National Galvanizing, pioneering hot-dipped galvanizing in a service center. This venture delivered corrosion-resistant steel, setting new benchmarks for durability and quality in processing.

1996

Butler, Indiana Facility Opens

In 1996, Heidtman Steel opened its expansive Butler, Indiana facility, equipped for pickling, slitting, and leveling. This milestone amplified our steel processing capabilities, delivering unmatched precision and advancing our tradition of quality craftsmanship.

2005

Fulton County Processing Investment

In 2005, Heidtman Steel invested in Fulton County Processing, broadening our advanced steel fabrication expertise. This strategic step enhanced our ability to deliver tailored solutions, reinforcing our commitment to innovation and precision.

2006

Butler Sheet Division Formed

In 2006, Heidtman Steel launched the Butler Sheet Division in Indiana, specializing in sheet production. This expansion strengthened our steel processing portfolio, delivering customized steel and elevating our legacy of technical excellence.

2009

Toledo Blank Acquisition

In 2009, Heidtman Steel acquired Toledo Blank, enhancing our precision steel blanking capabilities. This pivotal acquisition expanded our customized processing offerings, shaping industry standards with innovative solutions and steadfast quality.

2013

John Bates Sr. Receives Industry Award

In 2013, John Bates Sr. earned the Service Center Executive of the Year award from Metal Center News. His visionary leadership propelled Heidtman Steel’s growth, advancing steel processing and cementing our reputation for quality.

Toledo Blank Becomes National Blanking

In 2016, Heidtman Steel rebranded Toledo Blank as National Blanking, refining our precision blanking operations. This transition broadened our tailored steel offerings, deepening our commitment to quality and innovation in processing.

2020

Heidtman Tubular Opens

In 2020, Heidtman Steel opened Heidtman Tubular, specializing in steel tubing production. This forward-thinking expansion enriched our processing capabilities, delivering high-quality tubular steel and strengthening our legacy of precision craftsmanship.

2022

Fulton County Processing Acquired

In 2022, Heidtman Steel fully acquired Fulton County Processing, building on our 2005 investment. This milestone bolstered our advanced steel fabrication, delivering customized solutions and redefining quality in steel processing innovation.

John Bates Jr. Assumes Presidency
